Transferring or ending an Arval business lease: what Arval's own guidance says

How Arval handles a transfer (novation) of a business lease to another company, what happens if your business is insolvent, and how ending early works.

Arval is BNP Paribas's vehicle leasing company and funds a lot of UK business car and van leases. If your agreement says Hyundai Contract Hire, that's run by Arval too. Here's what Arval's own guidance says about passing a lease to another business, what happens if your business is insolvent, and how ending early works.

Can you transfer an Arval lease to another business?

Arval calls a transfer a novation. In its words, a new party takes on the vehicle agreement and all future monthly payments, and everything else stays the same.

Arval's guidance describes the steps once it has the details it needs:

  1. Arval runs its checks on the business taking over.
  2. It sends paperwork for both businesses to complete.
  3. Any outstanding balance on the account is settled before the transfer completes.

Two things to sort out before you list:

  • Time left. In its guidance on business insolvency, Arval says vehicle contracts must have at least six months of term remaining. If you're close to that, check with Arval straight away.
  • The fee. We haven't found a transfer fee published on Arval's website, so ask Arval in writing what it charges and whether it will consider a transfer of your agreement.

If your business is insolvent

Arval is clear that a transfer isn't always possible through insolvency. It depends on the insolvency procedure being followed.

  • Arval can't accept novation requests for liquidations, or for companies that have been dissolved.
  • If more than six months remain and the procedure may be eligible, a director listed on Companies House should contact the business's Arval representative, and the Insolvency Practitioner should email Arval's collections team when Arval is notified of the insolvency.
  • If fewer than six months remain, or the procedure isn't eligible, the vehicles are collected and returned to Arval.

The lesson: act early. Once a company is in liquidation or dissolved, the transfer route has gone.

Ending an Arval lease early

If you hand the vehicle back early, Arval charges an Early Termination Charge.

  • You can request a quote through Arval's early termination form. Arval says requests can take up to two working days, or you can call for an immediate estimate with your current mileage to hand.
  • Arval doesn't pro-rate the final rental on an early termination, so you pay the full month the vehicle goes back in.

Our guide to the Early Termination Charge shows how a typical charge is worked out.

Transfer or terminate?

Get two numbers before you decide: Arval's written Early Termination Charge quote, and its transfer fee. Then compare them with the cost of transferring through Swap-a-Lease: £39.99 to list, and a success fee only if the transfer completes (two months' rental if 12 or more months remain, or one month's if fewer).

How to transfer an Arval lease with Swap-a-Lease

  1. Check how many months are left, and ask Arval in writing whether it will consider a transfer and what it charges.
  2. List the lease for £39.99. Your details stay hidden until a business registers interest.
  3. We put you in touch with interested businesses through Swap-a-Lease and you agree the handover.
  4. The incoming business goes through Arval's checks and both businesses complete Arval's paperwork.
  5. The success fee is only due if the transfer completes.
