Lease transfer or Early Termination Charge: which costs your business less?
Ending a business car lease early can cost thousands. Passing it to another business often costs a fraction. Here's how the two compare.
When a business car lease no longer fits, most businesses assume they have to pay to end it. Often the cheaper answer is to hand it to another business. Here's how the two compare.
The two options
- Early Termination Charge: you return the car and pay the funder a charge — commonly around half of the rentals left, sometimes more.
- Lease transfer: another business takes over the agreement and the remaining rentals. You pay the funder's transfer admin fee instead of a termination charge.
Side by side: a typical example
A 36-month lease at £400 a month plus VAT, with 20 months left.
- Ending early at 50% of remaining rentals: about £4,000 plus VAT, plus any excess mileage or damage charges
- Transferring through Swap-a-Lease: the funder's admin fee (check our funder table at swap-a-lease.co.uk/fees), a £39.99 listing fee and, only if the transfer completes, a success fee of two months' rental (£800 here). Around £1,000 in total.
In this example, transferring saves around £3,000. The gap widens the more months are left on the lease.
When a transfer makes sense
- There are more than a few months left
- The car is in good condition and within its mileage
- Your funder allows transfers to another business
- You can wait a few weeks for the right business to come along and for the funder to approve them
When ending early may be simpler
- Only a month or two is left, so the charge is small
- The funder doesn't allow transfers
- The car is heavily over mileage or damaged, which makes it harder to pass on
What the business taking over gets
The business taking over gets a car with a short, fixed commitment and no deposit to fund — often available straight away, with no factory lead time. That's why there's real demand for well-kept leases with 6–24 months left.
