Taking over a truck lease: an HGV without the factory wait or a five-year contract

Need an HGV for a new contract? Taking over another haulier's truck lease can get you on the road faster, often with a sweetener from the seller. Here's how it works.

Won a new contract and need a truck now? New HGVs can take months to arrive, and most truck contract hire runs for several years. Taking over the rest of another operator's lease is often quicker, shorter and cheaper.

Why truck leases come up for transfer

Haulage is a contract business. When a customer contract moves to a rival, a depot closes or a fleet is cut, the operator is left paying for trucks it no longer needs. Ending a truck lease early usually means an Early Termination Charge, so many operators would rather hand the lease on.

The truck market has been tough. Fleet News reported UK truck registrations down almost 12% in the first half of 2025, with some leasing customers cutting their fleets. That means more surplus trucks, and sellers who may offer an incentive to whoever takes one over.

How the takeover works

  1. Find a truck, trailer or pick-up on Swap-a-Lease, or post a Wanted request saying what you need.
  2. Register interest. We connect you with the operator through Swap-a-Lease.
  3. The funder credit-checks your business and, if it approves, transfers (novates) the agreement into your name.
  4. You take the truck and pay the same rental for the rest of the term.

What to check on an HGV

  • The exact spec. Rigid or artic, axles, cab type, tail-lift, body and any fridge unit.
  • Mileage against the allowance. Excess mileage on a truck can be expensive at the end of the term.
  • Maintenance and tyres. Find out whether the lease includes maintenance, and when the next inspection and MOT are due.
  • Operator licence. Make sure the vehicle fits your O-licence authorisation before you commit.
  • Livery and equipment. Agree who removes the old livery, and what stays with the truck.
  • The incentive. In a weak market, ask whether the seller will contribute towards taking it on.

What it costs

You pay the monthly rental, plus any fee the funder charges to transfer the agreement. Browsing and registering interest on Swap-a-Lease are free.

Next step

Browse lease transfers, or post a Wanted request and choose "HGV / truck" or "Trailer". We'll email you when a match is listed.
